Opus Dei & the PAREF System
Opus Dei is a personal prelature of the Catholic Church whose mission is to spread the doctrine of the universal call to holiness. Its connection to the school is summed up as follows:
- The founding parents of the school were inspired by the teaching of Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei. Thus, a lay spirituality is followed.
- The school’s Chaplain is a priest of Opus Dei who provides spiritual formation and the sacraments. Opus Dei has no jurisdiction in the administration and operation of the school.
Origin and birth of PAREF
Giving the best to their children remains one of the greatest aspirations of parents. For this reason, a group of parents and educators who saw the need for bringing the task of education to where it properly belongs, the home, established a foundation answering the need for a systematic approach to fully involving parents in the education of their children. Aptly called PARENTS FOR EDUCATION FOUNDATION, INC. (PAREF), it seeks to meet the difficult and demanding challenge of raising children and molding them into fully independent and responsible individuals.
The symbol of PAREF, which is present in all PAREF schools, comprises of the vinta and the three stars above it. The vinta, a sturdy Filipino boat, is the PAREF symbol. It stands for the educational philosophy shared by all the schools that belong to the PAREF system. The stars above the vinta represent the three (3) sectors that comprise the PAREF school community. For the success of the PAREF system with its underlying philosophy, there must be a wholesome interaction among the parents, teachers and students. For formation to be effective, the parents and teachers must themselves be such that they can lead the students by word and deed.
